Drivers in Jacksonville can now participate in a self-driving car pilot program which tests automated driving systems using an online tool known as the AV TEST (Automated Vehicle Transparency and Engagement for Safe Testing) Initiative.
Jacksonville, Florida is one of 16 other locatiions throughout the US where the program is being tested, including Orlando, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Austin, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and San Francisco.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is overseeing the program. They state that participants in the AV Test Initiative "are stakeholders in on-road testing of automated vehicles in the United States – developers, testers, operators, states, and other governmental entities."
According to James Owens, Deputy Administrator of the NHTSA, the more information the public has about self-driving cars, "the more they will understand the development of this promising technology." Owens continues, "Automated driving systems are not yet available for sale to the public, and the AV TEST Initiative will help improve public understanding of the technology's potential and limitations as it continues to develop." This online tool will of course update frequently as more participants add or modify their information.
One of the vehicles in Jacksonville currently being tracked is the Automon shuttle manufactured by a company called Navya. Its latest activity as of September 1 shows the shuttle transporting COVID-19 tests to Mayo Clinic.
