According to recent data provided by the Department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Jacksonville auto accident-related fatalities continue to climb.
The Florida Crash Dashboard shows that in Duval County alone there were 166 fatal accidents in 2019 compared to 143 in 2018. As of September 10, the data is already showing 110 traffic fatalities in 2020. In 2019, there were 30 traffic fatalities in St. Johns County. There are already 24 in 2020. Many of these fatalities are pedestrians.
According to a study by the Smart Growth America, Florida was ranked #1 in a list of the most dangerous states for pedestrians in 2019, Jacksonville being #6 on the list of cities. From their research they state:
"This is happening because our streets, which we designed for the movement of vehicles, have not changed. In fact, we are continuing to design streets that are dangerous for all people. Furthermore, federal and state policies, standards, and funding mechanisms still produce roads that prioritize high speeds for cars over safety for all people.
"To reverse this trend and save lives, we need to protect all users of the transportation system through our policies, programs, and funding."
