A Jacksonville woman was killed and another was critically injured after being hit by a car on Hanson Drive North near Ed White High School early Monday morning.
On their morning walk
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office reported that two elderly women were walking along Hanson Drive North—a narrow residential road without a sidewalk—when an SUV struck them.
The two women, both in their 70s, were on their morning walk with a dog at the time of the crash.
One of the victims died at the scene. The other woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.
Reports confirmed that the 20-year-old driver stopped and remained at the scene.
Police are still working to determine the vehicle’s speed at the time of impact, and the cause of the collision remains under investigation.
This incident marked the 89th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2024.
Reminder: watch for pedestrians
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were more than 10,000 pedestrian-related crashes in 2022, including 765 fatalities.
While state agencies continue working to improve pedestrian safety, drivers play a critical role in preventing these incidents.
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable in areas like residential streets without sidewalks or designated walking paths.
Drivers should:
- slow down in residential areas
- follow posted speed limits
- stay alert near sidewalks, intersections, and crosswalks
- watch for pedestrians in areas without clear walkways
Extra attention in these situations can help prevent serious or fatal injuries.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a pedestrian accident, a Jacksonville car accident lawyer can help you understand your options, investigate what happened, and pursue compensation where appropriate.
