Hit While Crossing the Intersection
An Orange Park woman driving a red Jaguar was in the left lane going southbound on Blanding Boulevard. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, as she was approaching the intersection of Knight Boxx Road and Oak Lane, the 15-year-old boy riding his bicycle was attempting to cross the intersection. The car proceeded through the intersection and struck the teen.
The boy was thrown from his bike and sustained serious injuries. Paramedics arrived at the scene and took the victim to the Orange Park Medical Center for treatment.
Meanwhile, officers confirmed that the driver of the Jaguar pulled over after hitting the boy and stopped to help him. FHP also confirmed in a separate report that the teen was wearing a helmet when the incident took place.

Prepare for the Unexpected Around Bicyclists
In 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that over 41,000 bicyclists were injured in traffic-related accidents. Almost 1000 were killed.
It's easy to become frustrated or inpatient with bicyclists, and it's just as easy to misread their intentions at crosswalks, especially when they're children or teenagers. The best thing we can do as drivers is prepare for the unexpected.
When passing someone on a bike, SLOW DOWN and keep your distance. When approaching an intersection and see someone on a bicycle waiting at the crosswalk, pay close attention to their actions until you've passed.
These small and simple precautions can prevent accidents as save lives.
