A Jacksonville woman was killed and another was critically injured after being hit by a car on Hanson Drive North near Ed White High School early Monday morning.
On Their Morning Walk
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said two elderly women were walking on the side of Hanson Drive North - a narrow neighborhood road with no sidewalk - when an SUV hit them.
The two women in their 70s were on their morning walk with a dog at the time of the accident. One of the victims died at the scene. The other woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
Reports confirmed that the 20-year-old man driving the car stopped and stayed at the crash site. Police are still determining the speed of the driver when he hit the two women. The cause of the fatal collision is still under investigation.
This is the 89th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2024.
Reminder: Watch for Pedestrians
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), there were over 10,000 pedestrian-related collisions in 2022, including 765 fatalities. While state officials continue to improve pedestrian safety zones, drivers can continue to do their part.
Drivers play a crucial role in preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of pedestrians on the road, especially when the pedestrians are vulnerable in neighborhoods like this, or they're putting themselves in dangerous situations.
Please stay vigilant, slow down, follow the speed limit, and use extra caution when driving by sidewalks, through crosswalks, or see any sign of close pedestrian activity.
