This can happen to anyone if we're not careful. Even something as seemingly insignificant as checking a text still moves your eyeballs away from the road and what's taking place around you. Let's adopt habits like this:
- Calling & Texting: If you must check your phone, do it at a stoplight or pull over into a parking lot if it can't wait. Otherwise, wait until you reach your destination to check your phone.
- Navigation: If you're using your phone for navigation purposes, make sure you have it mounted in front of you, not in your hands.
- Music: If you're using your phone for music, either choose a playlist before you start driving or quickly change the song when you're at a stoplight. Same goes for using the touch screen.
- Eating: Don't try to eat messy fast food behind the wheel. The CDC recognizes eating as one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving.
- Passenger Behavior: If you're conversing with passengers, you don't need to look at them while you talk and drive. Keep your eyes on the road and stop talking if it becomes a distraction.
